The dozen long-stemmed red roses were delivered to the house before noon on Valentine’s Day. Charles received them from the delivery driver and was in the process of opening the attached note when Devon walked into the kitchen.

“Daddy, what are you doing?”

He dropped the envelope on the counter next to the flowers. “Why, just taking the card off, Darlin’. I wouldn’t want you pricking yourself on a thorn.”

Devon rolled her eyes, picked the card off the counter and read it quickly. She smiled and handed it to her dad to read. He peered over the top of his eyeglasses and smiled. “Aww, that’s nice. ‘To the only rose among the thorns. Love Always, Brandon.’ That boy certainly is good to you.”

“I’m glad you approve of him,” Devon responded in a sweetly sarcastic tone while she arranged the flowers in the vase.

“I do. He’ll take good care of you when I’m gone.”

Devon bristled and let go an exasperated sigh. “You’re not going anywhere. Besides, it will be my turn to take care of you.”

She heard him “humph“ and then say, “Promise me you won’t be puttin‘ me in some old folks home while my mind is still good. I couldn’t stand sittin’ around lookin’ at all those poor people droolin’ all over themselves and crappin’ in their pants.”

She wanted to laugh, but instead reached over and gave him a kiss on his whiskery cheek. “Don’t worry, Daddy. I’ll make certain to wait until your mind turns to mush before I put you there.”
